Stop smoking today, together

March 12th 2014 is the UK’s National No Smoking Day. Vowing to stop smoking today, together means that not only will you be doing your body (and bank balance) a great favour, you’ll be doing it joined by thousands across the country. What better time to stop?

What is No Smoking day?

National No Smoking day is a nationally recognised health improvement day supported by the British Heart Foundation and the NHS. The British Heart Foundation use the slogan ‘fight for every heart beat’ which is a great reminder that a healthy heart doesn’t always come naturally.

The aim of the day is to promote the fight against smoking to the whole country and give those persistent ‘I’ll quit tomorrow’ types the boost they need and the date to put in their diary. Their websites are full to the brim of great advice, top tips on how to prevent cravings, success stories and even events to take part in to distract you from your cravings, get fit and healthy and raise money for several charities. They even have chat forums to share your experiences with other quitter and share valuable insights.

Apart from healthier lungs, why should I quit smoking?

Everybody has different reasons for quitting whether it be to save money or to simply improve your breathing, but keeping these reasons as a reminder can help to improve your determination. Keep these reasons and any goals you have, posted to your laptop screen or even around the house to constantly remind you why you’re doing this.  Each cigarette contains over 4000 chemicals, many of them toxic, so every cigarette you DON’T smoke really does help relieve your body of more toxins.

As soon as you quit, your health will improve in the following ways:

To add to this, if you’re under 35, if you were to quit tomorrow your life expectancy is likely to be the same as a non-smoker. If you’re 65+ and quit tomorrow, you’ll still have a better life expectancy than those who continue to smoke past 65. It really is never too late!

If money is your motivation…

The British Heart Foundation’s website is the perfect place to find all the inspiration and advice you need to begin your new, smoke free life.

The NHS’s Smoke Free website also has a great ‘One Day Quit’ service which gives you 24 hours of free advice and support to help you quit once and for all on March 12. This is in addition to brilliant success stories and top tips for quitting.

All in all, there really are very few excuses not to stop smoking today, together! If you wish to spread the word around your organisation, there are plenty of sharable resources on the websites and please do share this blog!
